Development and Control of a Magnetorheological Damper-Based Brake Pedal Simulator for Vehicle Brake-by-Wire Systems

Abstract Recent developments have demonstrated that the brake pedal simulator (BPS) is becoming an indispensable apparatus for break-by-wire systems in future electric vehicles. Its main function to provide driver with a comfortable feel improve braking safety and comfort. This paper presents development control of adjustable BPS, using disk-type magnetorheological (MR) damper as passive reaction generator simulate traditional feel. A detailed description mechanical design MR damper-based BSP (MRDBBPS) presented this paper. Several basic performance experiments on MRDBBPS prototype are conducted. return-to-zero (RTZ) algorithm proposed avoid hysteresis repeatability force. In addition, RTZ algorithm-based real-time current-tracking controller (RTZRC) designed consideration response lag coil circuit. Finally, experimental system established by integrating into self-developed automotive test bench (AMRBTB), several performed. research proposes RTZRC which can significantly increase tracking accuracy characteristic curve, particularly at high velocity. Additionally, achieve effective favorable AMRBTB good repeatability.
